Getting past the guards was easy. Cole had done it with a little more caution than he might have in the past — more people, it seemed, were able to see and remember him these days — but they hadn't so much as once glanced his way.

The sun was hovering on the horizon, not yet past it. Cole had not wanted to come too late, in case Gavin might be asleep. The last thing he wanted to do was startle him into making too much noise.

He made his way gradually along the line of cells, giving a glance between the bars of each one before he found Gavin's.

Gavin was curled up in the corner of his cell, knees tucked in against his chest, arms held tightly around him. He didn't seem to register anyone approaching, not even looking up when Cole came to a stop in front of his cell.

He had long since given up on seeing anyone, save the guards who refused to speak to him.

"Wind howling through the holes in the stones. Drip of water from somewhere unseen. Too much sound in the silence."

Cole crouched down outside the bars, getting as close to Gavin's level as he could.

"We have to be quiet, or they'll hear us. But we can talk. I was sent to tell you something."

And to give. The bars were wide enough to hold one of Beleth's cookies through them, offering.

He looked up, then, something like a startled rabbit, eyes widening as they saw the stranger.

Or - or was it a stranger? He couldn't place it, but he could have sworn he'd seen the man somewhere before--

He carefully dragged himself closer, reaching out and taking the cook as if it was something to be in utter awe of.

"I -- thank you. I - I know you, don't I."

"I'm Cole." A gentle reminder, or an introduction, depending on one's perspective. "Beleth said you were alone. That they won't let anyone see you."

He didn't need any confirmation on Gavin's part — but he wanted to say who'd sent him.

"She wants you to know they're trying. That they haven't forgotten. And that she's sorry."

"Cole - yes, I do remember you. We talked--" But the memory was hard to grasp and he frowned. "... Sorry. I- I'm not doing very well, I guess. Hard to remember." He offered Cole a hopeless, apologetic smile, the cookie still uneaten, held carefully in his hands.

"Beleth-- Why is she sorry? She has nothing to be sorry for, don't -- Don't let her make this her fault, okay? Tell her that it's not her fault."

"She wishes should could do more. Act sooner. She doesn't like that you're alone." He shifted, going from a crouch to crossed legs, settling in. He could stay a while. He would.

"She said if things get ugly, she has a plan. She didn't explain what that means."

[slipshot]

Gavin smiled, softly, looking down at the cookie.

"... She cares so much about me," He murmured, half to himself and to half to Cole, or perhaps to no one at all. "About all of our clan. But please - don't let her get herself into trouble."

"She's waiting. She doesn't want to make things worse. Only if she has to." A sound in the distance, echoing through the cracks in the walls. Something like the squeak of a rat. Cole looked toward it, but didn't move otherwise.

Cole's reaction may have been subtle, but Gavin's wasn't. He startled, visibly, his ears pricking high and then flattening against his head when he realised what he was doing.

"I'm fine," He reassured Cole quietly. "Tell Beleth I'm fine. I'm just - I'm just fine."

"She won't believe you."

Which didn't mean he wouldn't tell her. Only that everyone involved would know it wasn't true.

"Tell her that I spent your whole visit rambling about dwarves I used to know," Gavin said, giving Cole a weak smile.

"Tell her that it was almost insufferable. She'll worry less, then."

[colecomfort]

"I could do that." The bit about the dwarves, anyway. It wasn't anything Gavin hadn't done before, after all.

"Would you like to talk about the dwarves?" Just to make it a little more true.
