She looks up again, before she eyes the tree itself, and begins to climb.]
I've thought about falling, too. But that ... that was just to hit the ground.
[She pulled herself onto a branch, and faced him soberly.]
You see so much beauty. How can you feel despair?

[It was harder, to talk about it in person. Harder not to just smile and laugh it off - but helping was more important than hiding, in this instance, and this is why she had come. So he smiles at her - because the smile is a reflex by now - but it doesn't quite reach his eyes.]

[Is her blunt reply, but her gaze changes then. Her jaw firms, as she looks out to the fireflies.]
I thought so. Sylaise knows the people in this world have let me know I don't fit in anywhere good. But ... it's not all people. And ... there are fireflies, and trees, and the forest after the rain. The first snowfall, and the first scent of spring.
[She sounds wistful.] I suppose ...after coming to the bottom, you can only look up. Find your way back up the path.

Sorry. If it helps, I think there probably is a place, somewhere. Just have to find it. I'm hoping that this might be it. [A vague wave toward Skyhold.]
Might as well enjoy the world for what its worth in the meantime, right? And if you need comfort, you can always ask. [A loose grin, that this time felt much more sincere.] But I figured truth was better, for the moment.

I don't need comfort. [Well that might not be entirely true, but ... she had come here for words, not embraces. She wasn't ready for that yet. Not with a stranger, not with a Dalish, even a kind one.]
[Still ... she felt herself edging towards friendship.] ...You seem like you do. What makes you outside of the world? Outside of, you know, being one of the People. Because usually that doesn't make us morose, that makes us angry.

[Definitely a half-elf, then. He'd assumed, when she'd invoked elven gods, but... 'us' was unmistakable. Pityable - because half-elves were, as far as the Dalish concerned - simply humans.]
If I could tell you that, I think I would be a lot better off in general. [A wry reply, but an honest one, and he leaned back against the tree and turned his gaze upward through to the stars, just beyond the branches.] But that's the point, I think. I'm not one of the people. I tried. And then I looked for anywhere else, and none of that fit either. If I'd been born a dwarf, that would have been okay, I think. The surface ones aren't supposed to feel the song of the stone.
But I wasn't, and I don't feel the song of anything, and I'm exhausted from making my clan disappointed.

[Which is why her reaction to that is straight from the gut, a hint of fire in her tone.] And are they the ones who get to decide what it means to be one of the People? Who said? Just because you aren't like them doesn't mean you're not one of us. You're unique - so be unique. Don't try to be any less because your clan is a bunch of ... [Right, remember, clan is family. A really crappy family, in her opinion, but still. She breathed in and out. Slowly.]
What I mean is ... you seem like a perfectly fine specimin of the People. You're clever. You're obviously talented. You see more of the world than just black or white - you see the magic in everything. Isn't that the lesson of the Ancestors? Not ... dragging ourselves through the past, but learning new ways for the future?

I try not to judge myself at all. There are more than enough people who will do it for me. Which - which of your parents was elven? [It was probably a rude question but he couldn't help the curiosity.]

[He gave a sheepish, apologetic look when she glared at him, but shook his head when she asked.]
No. I ah... I tend to avoid Dalish clans, when I'm wandering. I just thought - well. I thought it was kind, that she kept the People alive in you. [He flushed slightly, looking away. He knew he was probably being rude, but. He was being honest.] Not many would. Backwards idiots, as you put it. But I... It's just nice, I suppose.
